The Dragon Conquered Europe
In the end the dragon prevailed in people’s minds by conquering everyone from within
Dragons in European Mythology
In European mythology, a dragon is a legendary creature with snake-like characteristics. The term dragon comes from the Latin draco, which is derived from the Greek drákon and means “snake”. In Germanic mythology it is called wurm which means worm and in the old English, wyrm, which means snake.
There are six main types of European dragons: Greek Dragons, Roman Dragons, Slavic Dragons, Germanic Dragons, Catalan Dragons, and Italian Dragons.
The German and Scandinavian cultures understood dragons as evil and powerful beings. The Vikings decorated their ships with dragon figures, because they believed that this way they would be protected at sea.
Celtic Dragon Mythology
As we have seen, there are many varieties of dragons in stories and legends throughout Europe. In many of these stories, the dragons are greedy and in some cases they have magical properties that can be transferred to humans when they are defeated. For this reason there were many legends of men killing dragons that sowed fear among communities. Other peoples such as the Celts believed that dragons were creatures that lived in forests and represented power and dominance. They used these images on their banners and shields and created a symbol that would last until today.
Modern Dragon Story
The modern concept of the European dragon is of a huge creature capable of expelling fire, it has big wings, four legs, horns, a long and muscular tail. Some depictions of dragons show feathers on their wings and crests, fiery manes, spines that appear to be harder than ivory and run down their spine, and various exotic decorations. Many modern stories depict dragons as extremely intelligent beings, capable of speech, and sometimes associated with great magic and spells. For example, it has been said that the blood of dragons is a source of mystical properties and for this reason the legendary Siegfried was able to understand the language of birds. To another hero, the blood of a dragon in his body created an impenetrable natural armor. It is also known that classical European dragons protect a cave full of gold and many treasures. Usually there is always a knight of a kingdom who tries to eliminate the beast and save a princess.
